Spa Body Makeover company overview

Humble beginnings

Body Makeover Systems was founded in San Francisco in 1985. The purpose of the company was to help clients obtain rapid body transformations naturally, using only nutrition and exercise. Due to the great successes's experienced by the company, in 1992, Body Makeover Systems incorporated and moved to the Los Angeles area. Within a few years the company grew in reputation due to the extensive success with celebrities and was represented by nearly 50 trainers in over 20 locations.

Recipe for the perfect weight loss spa

In late 2002 producers from a new concept for a television reality show approached Body Makeover Systems with the idea of creating a show around makeovers. However, there was some concern that not all the participants would achieve the desired results in the 4 to 6 weeks that would make up each episode. The challenge was to ensure rapid, dramatic changes in every contestant in a short period of time. The needs of the project were defined as follows:

An environment where food, and ingredients and intake could be controlled completely
An environment with no outside stress or distraction
A team of experts available to monitor progress and make changes immediately to ensure proper progress
On site experts to monitor the minutest details of exercise and activity level to modify program as needed
An environment where everyone has the same goal in mind
Environment which produces the correct mental attitude towards goals.

In early 2003 Stacey Hoffman, our first Extreme Makeover contestant, arrived at the newly formed weight loss center and began her transformation. Within 6 weeks she had a new body. She went from a size 16 to a 10 in only 3 weeks and after 12 weeks, she was down to a size 3! The episode aired and was a great success resulting in more episodes being purchased by ABC television.

Once the perfect formula for weight loss was perfected, Spa Body Makeover was born and opened to the general public! Within the first year we realized what an amazing, positive impact it had on our client's lives.

Evolution from a pure weight loss spa to a health and wellness spa

Four full seasons of Extreme Makeover, seven years and thousands of clients later, Body Makeover Systems has added and fine tuned many more services, classes and resources that add healthy benefits and education to make Spa Body Makeover a well rounded health spa. We have learned that weight loss is not only skin deep and has a lasting effect when combined with our mission to empower our guests. In addition, taking time out to take care of yourself not only makes weight loss easier, it also recharges you for greater stress removal. The result, is a more effective person who is in much greater control of their body. A body that is comfortable and safe can better allow the health benefits realized at Spa Body Makeover to take maximum effect.

We will continue to offer more solutions to health concerns with each passing year. As well as sifting through useless or incorrect data to ensure that you only have the most reliable and pertinent information on nutrition, exercise, and health.

Nutrition

The nutrition component of the Spa Body Makeover system is the most important part. Your program is designed to speed up your metabolic rate and preserve lean muscle tissue. Most diet programs are based on reducing caloric intake. While this works initially, most dieters reach a plateau within weeks and begin gaining weight faster than before the diet. This is because they lose muscle tissue as the body tries to make up for the shortfall of food by stripping protein from itself. The second reason calorie cutters regain more weight after a diet is due to the body's ability to adapt. Because of the reduction in caloric intake, the body reduced the level of metabolism.

At Spa Body Makeover, we use the most powerful process in the human body-the ability to adapt-to your advantage! We make your body adapt to increased food intake spaced at regular intervals throughout the day. By eating small meals regularly, your body will adapt by revving up and eventually stay at a higher metabolic level all day long. In a sense, we are forcing your metabolic rate to increase.

The next phase in our process is to keep your body at a stable blood sugar level that that will keep insulin levels from rising and storing excess sugar as fat. You will be eating sufficient carbohydrates throughout the day, but they will be spaced out in a way that your body can utilize the carbohydrates efficiently.

Furthermore, our program maintains your fat intake to a healthy minimum, to ensure that your metabolism is utilizing stored fat as an energy source. Finally, your program is changed every few weeks to keep your body adapting.

There are more intricacies to our weight loss program; and even more levels of complexity with specific health goals in mind. However, these are the key components to the Spa Body Makeover program that create the rapid changes in your body. Until ultimately you are turned into an efficient fat burning machine without having to think about it or perform hours and hours of exercise to maintain it.

Resistance exercise (formerly known as weight lifting)

The method of working out at Spa Body Makeover is unlike anything else at any other weight loss or fitness spa. Our exercise regimen is not a fitness regimen. You can be very fit but not look anything like what you want. Our method avoids movements that group muscles together to do the work. The reason we avoid these movements is simple. When you work together as a group, usually the strong take on most of the work and the weak fall behind. Most people have a body that is out of balance. If you exercise in this way, your strong muscles will become stronger and your weak muscles will actually become weaker. Even if you focus on posture and form, you are not isolating the muscle that really needs the work.

Our method of resistance training is called Specifically Applies Resistance (SAR) and the foundation is gradual adaptation of individual muscles to predictably shape the body in a desired way. You do not sculpt a beautiful statue from a marble slab with a sledge hammer. You take a fine chisel and work the small details. The body should be treated the same way as a beautiful sculpture. Small, controlled movements, using only the muscles that need to be developed, will balance the body and create the exact look that you want.

Cardio

There is no need to get you fit or ready for the next Olympics. Our goal is to get your body to burn fat before anything else. In the Forms section of our Rooms, Rates and Reservations page, you will find a study that shows that optimal fat burning occurs at 62 percent of your maximum oxygen absorption point. This means the point at which your body can no longer keep up with the demand of oxygen from physical activity. You will perform your cardiovascular exercise at Spa Body Makeover within this optimum fat burning range. This is usually accomplished by walking on the treadmill, elliptical or recumbent bicycle. This is the most effective way to eliminate stored body fat using exercise.

FAQ

1. What do the program fees include?

All meals on the program are included as well as the gym fees, water, four training sessions per week, up to nine cardio sessions per week, accommodations, transportation to and from Los Angeles International Airport(LAX), and $300 per week at the Loews Spa.

 

2. Do I need to bring extra money?

You will need to bring cash and a credit card for incidentals such as toiletries, long distance phone calls, additional spa therapies, shopping, internet service in the hotel room, transportation around town, gratuities, miscellaneous incidentals, tours; as well as internet access. All the rooms have a LAN connection at an additional charge of approximately $10 per day and there is a business center that is free for checking email.

 

3. Will I need a car while I am here?

All transportation is provided to and Los Angeles International Airport and the Body Makeover Systems Office. Many points of interest are within walking distance, therefore a car is not necessary. Some clients have elected to rent a car (approx. $300/week) so they can see the sights. Keep in mind the hotel charges approximately $26 per night for parking.

 

4. When and how are the fees paid?

Before reservations can be made with the hotel, we need a deposit of half of the cost of the first weeks stay. The balance is paid upon arrival and each subsequent week is paid at the beginning of each week, in full.

 

5. What is the recommended length of stay?

The longer we can work with you, the more you can learn and the more momentum you can take with you to continue at home. You will see results in the first week and many clients succeed after one weeks stay. However, many of our clients can leave "finished" after four to six weeks.

 

6. Do I have to begin the program on a certain day of the week?

We accept new clients any time after 4 pm pacific time Monday thru Sunday. However, Sunday arrivals are preferred.

 

7. What is the climate like where I will be staying?

This IS sunny Southern California and the climate does range between low 50 degrees to 90 degrees depending’ on the season. We will send you an information packet with updated weather and itinerary.

 

8. How can family and friends contact or visit me while I am staying at the spa?

Anyone may visit or call our guests simply by dialing the number to the hotel and asking for the room. If you expect visitors please schedule them around training times.

 

9. What are the options for companions NOT enrolled in the Spa Experience who want to stay in the same room?

Anyone staying who is not enrolled in the Makeover program is responsible for meals, incidentals and difference in room price.

 

10. What clothes should I bring?

Bring GOOD SHOES!! You may be walking as much as two hours per day and shoes are the key. Please bring a tank top and shorts for the workouts. There is a night life at the hotel as well as many places to enjoy so you may bring the full spectrum of attire.

 

11. What else should I bring?

We suggest you leave as much stress at home and only bring things that are enjoyable. Books and movies are among the most popular items, there is access to a mall and plenty of shopping. A heart rate monitor is very useful and can be purchased at Sears and sporting goods stores.

 

12. Will I have a complete medical exam or otherwise incorporate chiropractors, physical therapists or other kinds of specialists in the program?

We do work very closely with a Doctor of internal medicine as well as a physical therapist if any needs should arise. However, it is not necessary in most cases, and we will also work with your doctor on complex issues. We also work with deep-tissue therapists that are expert in the Soft Tissue Alignment and Restructuring Technique. In addition, we have access to masseurs with various backgrounds in massage therapy.

 

13. What happens in a typical day?

You will be eating every two to three hours, training at least one hour per day aerobically and four times per week for an hour with resistance. We can provide you with a sample itinerary before you arrive at the hotel.

 

14. I am a vegetarian. Will this program work for me?                                                     

Our experience has shown that diets with animal based proteins combined with carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables work best for weight loss and reshaping the body in a healthy way. A vegetarian diet does not allow for the results our program provides, therefore we do not feel comfortable charging such a premium for marginal results.     

 

15. I have food allergies. Can you accommodate my needs?

We can work around any food allergies and food preferences. As long as you can eat one green vegetable, one animal based protein and a starch, we can design a program for you.

 

16. I have a pet. Can I bring him/her?

The hotel does allow pets less than 13 pounds in size however there are no "sitting" services available and you will be leaving the room for extended periods of time.

 

17. How do I get to the spa?

You may drive to our facility if you are in the area however we will provide transportation to and from Los Angeles International Airport. You are responsible for your own plane ticket.

 

18. What about gratuities?

The price of your stay includes some tips but not others.  Tips that are included are: Sky-Limo driver tips (taxi service to and from airport), and food service tips for your regular meals. (If you are staying with someone not on the program, their food service tips are not included).  Appropriate tips that you are responsible for are: maid service, bell hop service, food service for any guests you may have, tips for Loews Spa treatments, and Body Makeover Spa employees’ tips (your trainer etc.) are optional.
